Compared to Krakatoa, Mount St. Helens was a firecracker. Winchester's book covers the history of the region, especially as a Dutch colony and gives a good working description of plate tectonics and the history of that discovery. As a technophile I found that quite interesting.
Overall, the book is good, but I won't say perfect/5(4). Michael Avallone was an incredibly prolific writer and I must say that I enjoy his style when it comes to novelizations. This one involves a shipload of scurvy characters hunting for shipwrecked pearls while Krakatoa gets ready to make the biggest explosion ever recorded in human history/5.
